Kiss Ourselves Goodbye

(Light rain...) (Fire crackling...) (A child quietly crying...) "They're getting closer..." "If we don't leave tonight..." "There won't be another morning." (Long silence...) "I love you..." ------------------------------------------------

This fire barely keeping all the darkness out. Everybody's quiet... Nobody wants to say what they're really thinking. A little girl sleeping with her teddy bear... Like tomorrow's still promised. A father staring into the flames, trying like hell not to let his tears fall. I pulled an old photograph out of my pocket... Smiled for one damn second... Then reality punched me right back in the chest. How the fuck did life change this fast? ------------------------------------------------

If tonight's the last time we ever see the sunrise... Hold somebody close. Say what you never said. Leave nothing behind. If this world ends... Don't let love die first. ------------------------------------------------

I keep hearing voices... Not ghosts... Just memories. Birthday parties. Family dinners. Kids running through the house. Those little moments we all thought would always be there. Now every second feels like borrowed time. I don't fear dying... I fear somebody I love thinking I stopped fighting. If I fall tomorrow... Tell 'em... I never stopped believing there was something worth saving. ------------------------------------------------

Sometimes strength isn't carrying a weapon. Sometimes strength... Is looking somebody in the eyes... While your own heart's breaking... And saying... "It's gonna be okay." Even when you don't know if that's true. ------------------------------------------------

If we gotta kiss ourselves goodbye... Let's do it with courage. Let's do it with faith. Let's do it with love. Because they can destroy our cities... But they can't erase who we were. ------------------------------------------------

(Radio static...) "...To every survivor..." "...The convoy leaves at first light..." "...Anyone left behind..." "...may never get another chance." (Piano fades...)
